Legalisation of UK documents
The legalisation office UK has been made simpler through the process of apostilling a document in accordance with the framework established by the Hague Convention of January 1961, effective from January 1965. The United Kingdom joined the Hague Convention in October 1961.
Apostille services
An apostille is a stamped official certificate that verifies the authenticity and accuracy of a document for international use. It confirms the legitimacy of signatures and seals on public records. The apostille stamp applied on the back of the requested document confirms the validity of a document, signature, stamp or seal. An Apostille certificate can be issued on any UK document. The apostilles authenticate public documents, simplifying the process of international document certification and preventing the need to further legalize your documents in countries that are signatories to the Hague Convention. The process has made it easy for individuals and businesses to meet international legal requirements. It serves as a universally recognized seal of approval, making sure that a document issued in one country is accepted in another country without further authentication.
It certifies the origin of the document but does not provide any information about the contents of the document. Certificate attestation through Apostille services is advantageous in cases that would otherwise require certifications from the origin and destination states. The Hague Convention has abolished the latter requirement. Countries not part of the Hague Convention do not recognize the electronically used Hague apostille. For countries outside the Hague Apostille Convention, you must legalize your document (also called attested) for international use. This involves two steps:
- Certificate authentication by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
- Destination country’s Embassy Attestation or Consulate in London.
Foreign Commonwealth office legalisation, UK
The legalisation office UK or Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), legalizes UK public documents through the following steps:
- Verifying authenticity: Checks whether the signatures, stamps, or seals on a document match their records.
- Attaching an apostille: A stamped official certificate that validates the document for use in other countries.
- Issuing electronic e-Apostilles: This option is quicker, cheaper, and more efficient for some documents.
You might need to get a UK document legalized if an official in another country asks for it. Legalized documents are required for many international transactions, such as overseas working visas and property management.
For FCO legalisation or FCO apostille, you can:
- Submit the document to the Legalisation Office UK.
- If the document matches their records, the Legalisation Office will attach an apostille on the back of the requested document confirming the validity of a document, signature, stamp or seal.
- If the country you’re sending the document to isn’t a member of the Hague Convention, you’ll need to get the document stamped at the country’s embassy in London and get the document approved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the country you’re sending it to. This is because the countries that are not part of the Hague Convention do not recognize the electronically used Hague apostille.
- For FCO document legalisation, the documents may be submitted for traditional apostilling by post or courier or through an authorized company that uses its expertise to facilitate the procedure.
You can also apply for an e-Apostille.
